This guide will show you how to manually configure a VPN connection on your Android device using the L2TP protocol.
Note: PPTP and L2TP/IPsec provide weak security benefits and should only be used for anonymization or for changing locations.
Get your ExpressVPN account credentials
To set up ExpressVPN manually, you will first need to obtain your ExpressVPN credentials for the manual configuration.
Open the Welcome Email you received when you signed up for ExpressVPN. Tap the link in the email.
If you can’t find the link, sign in to your account here.
After signing in, tap on Set Up ExpressVPN.
Under Show other devices, tap on Manual Config.
Select PPTP & L2TP/IPsec. This will show you your username, password, and a list of server addresses around the world.
Keep this browser window open. You will need this information for the setup.
Set up the VPN configuration
Note: Due to the many different Android configurations, if your system looks drastically different from the below, please contact the ExpressVPN Support Team for device-specific assistance.
Go to Settings > More… > Wireless & Networks (for other versions of Android, this might be under Settings > Connections > More connection settings instead).
Select VPN and tap the + on the top right corner (other versions of Android might name this Add VPN instead).
On the Edit VPN profile screen, enter the following:
Name: Type any name that will help you recognize your VPN connection. You are recommended to type in the location name of the server address you will use later. For example:
Type: L2TP/IPSec PSK
Server address: Type one of the server addresses provided (e.g. la-abc-abcd.abcde.com)
L2TP Secret: (Leave blank)
IPSec identifier: (Leave blank)
IPSec pre-shared key: 12345678
DNS search domains: (Leave blank)
DNS servers (e.g.220.127.116.11): (Leave blank)
Tap Save once you are done!
Tap the VPN profile you just made. Type your Username and Password that you got earlier. Make sure Save account information is ticked. Then tap Connect.
Congratulations! You should now be connected to the VPN service. Tap the VPN profile to make sure the connection is working.
To disconnect, simply tap Disconnect.
